About Kapiti Car Club

Kapiti Car Club was founded in 1976 by a small group led by Peter Parnell, Cheryl and Shane Murland. This was as a result of the 70’s urban drift which saw a number of motorsport people moving from the City to enjoy the more tranquil Kapiti Coast.

Apart from night trials and other social based motorsport, gravel sprints quickly attracted popularity due mainly to the number of country roads in the surrounding area, Kapiti was now on the map as a progressive club led by enthusiastic people on a path to success.

Developing talent is a hallmark of Kapiti Car Club. Having several National title holders recognizes the depth of experience that members can tap into.

With over 200 members Kapiti Car Club continues to provide members with a friendly forum from which to pursue their interest in motor sport. Although the gravel roads have gradually become sealed due to population growth, Kapiti continues to seek out venues that provide a playground that challenges drivers to hone their skills and enjoy their sport.

A Brief History of The Trophies

Presidents Trophy 2002
Presented by John Clunie to recognise the highest achiever in National or International Competition.
Club Captains Trophy 2002
Awarded to the person who achieves the most meritorious result in Clubsport competition.
Aaron Harris Motorsport Trophy 2002
Presented by Aaron Harris to recognise the highest achiever in a Summer Circuit Series.
Robinson Rallisport trophy 2002
Awarded to the highest achiever in a National Rally Series.
GR Motorsport Trophy 2002
Presented by Greg Bott and Rex Mudgway to recognise the highest achiever in a Regional Gravel Series.
Kapiti Car Club Committee Tarmac Cup 2002
Awarded to the highest achiever in regional tarmac competition including Winter Series racing and special interest categories.
Clubsport Gravel Cup 2002
Awarded to the highest achiever at Gravel events run under a clubsport permit.
Clubsport Tarmac Cup 2002
Awarded to the highest achiever at Tarmac events run under a clubsport permit.
Gardner Trophy – Most Promising driver 1977
Presented in the 70’s by Dick and Jan Gardner to recognise and encourage the most promising driver in any discipline.
KE Parnell Trophy 1976
Presented in 1976 by club founders the Parnell family, Awarded to the driver who enters the greatest number of invite events under their Kapiti membership.
Barbara Memorial Trophy 1976
Presented in 1976 by Bill Gascoigne in memory of his then late Wife who believed greatly in the value of dedication to service.
This trophy is intended to recognise the person who has contributed outstanding service to the club.
Kapiti Car Club Trophy of Appreciation 2002
Awarded to a person/s who need not be club members but may for special reasons be deserving of recognition and appreciation.
